Electric Blue

I like to think that this earring is like lightning; with the bits of gold against the dark blue of the lapis lazuli. I love watching lightning flash across the dark sky on rainy nights and I think this earring is a result of looking out of the window one rainy night. I had just finished making a necklace using a brand new strand of lapis lazuli and I had a few leftovers, so I paired it with dark grey Swarovski crystals and copper wire. My sister commented that the wire coils surrounding the stone are like the coils on electric insulators - not to mention that the stone can turn - so I'm naming this after her comment!

My obsession with stringing

Someone asked me today why I like to string necklaces so much.

She said it "isn't challenging" and that it was "simple".

But I love stringing necklaces because they are challenging.

Sometimes it's easier to come up with something complicated than simple, because it is a human tendency to try to fit all the things we like into one. Everytime when I am coming up with a design for a stringing necklace, I have to constantly remind myself that the design needs to be versatile yet unique, complicated yet simple, traditional yet modern, and most importantly, elegant and worthy of daily wear and mix-and-match. And every single necklace is an embodiment of a particular style, culture, and character.

So, stringing necklaces to me is like walking on a beam or playing see-saw, where balance is the key. What say you?

Helen Reddy's Delta Dawn kept playing in my mind when I see this necklace. I love the combination of brown and green hues of this necklace. It's really long, which makes it interesting. One long necklace, 2 rounds, or even 3. I can wear it 3 rounds round my neck and it isn't tight like a choker.

I love the organic feel of this necklace. I don't know why. The earthy colours made me imagine I belong to one of those indigenous tribes in the forest. Not in a barbaric and uncivilized way, but one that reminds you of how much mankind has progressed. Suprisingly it wasn't the amazonite rondelles that inspired this piece, but the wooden rondelles. So I paired them up with moss agate rondelles and japanese gold beads. Actually I had to make this twice, because I missed out a gold bead right smack in the middle of the necklace when I first made it. And the missing gold bead made the amazonite seem lacking in lustre. But for now, it makes me want to go to visit the Delta River.

Bastille

For those who know, I can be quite a francophile and will be sitting for my DELF coming December. One day I turned up for class at Alliance Française de Singapour to find the place completely decked in blue, white, and red. Of course, they were celebrating Bastille Day (formally called La Fête Nationale). Suddenly I was so overwhelmed and inspired by the combination of the three colours that I created Bastille.

And I love it so much that I made an extra one just to keep, and one to sell on Etsy. Strung together using dark green organza ribbon, this necklace is versatile because one can control the length of it, it's easy to match clothes, is a tad retro, and not to mention the parisian chic in there! Wore it two days in a row right after I made it; shorter on the first day and slightly longer on the second. :)
